This is my reply to Tab's post: https://dlc6182.wixsite.com/theroundtable/single-post/2017/11/03/Is-it-a-race-issue-or-a-gender-issue
I think that it may be a little bit of both. There are no prevalent black women in country music as of right now, and for fans of country music to see that, I think they had a culture shock. There is no, and there should be no gatekeeping on country music when it comes to race and sex. People were prolly like wtf is going on? I feel also the thing that didn't help the situation was that the album is only able to be streamed through TIDAL which like nobody has lol. What I'm getting at is that they didn't know that she could add country elements to her style prior to this performance. Since barely any black people are grown up on country music I feel like white people think that that's "their music", kinda in the same sense that black believe hip-hop belongs to them. It is an odd space, but I would love to see what kind of content black women could bring to country music.
