Music Industry Double Standards Classmate Response

The classmate post I would like to respond to is Tabatha’s post Music Industry Double Standards. This post was about how people responded to Beyonce’s CMA performance of Daddy Lessons. She also contrasted the way people responded to Taylor Swift’s change from country to hip hop. After reading Tabatha’s post, I could agree that there is a clear double standard in the music industry. Black artist are not welcomed in many other categories, especially not country music. Beyonce, who is from the south, had a song featuring a southern perspective. This seemed like the perfect formula for a country song, however, because she is not normally in this genre, or to go further because she is Black, this is unacceptable. White artist sing Hip Hop music all of the time. And most times, they are accepted by the Black community. It’s as if black people can’t have a country experience, or can’t be country. This is true even when they are literally from the country. Blacks are forced to stay in certain categories no matter the experience or perspective they can bring. This makes talent irrelevant, and makes color the main focal point. For these reasons I totally agree with Tabatha’s post.
