“It's nasty when you set us up
Then roll the dice, then bet us up
You overnight the big rifles, then tell Fox to be scared of us
Gang members or terrorists, et cetera, et cetera
America's reflections of me, that's what a mirror does”
A track dedicated to surfacing controversial racial issues, Kendrick speaks on the government systematically placing African Americans in prison. Widely referring to the War on Drugs which disproportionately targeted black men to fill privatized prisons to create money flow. No thanks to President Nixon, black men were thrown in these prisons causing a huge rise in the incarceration rate. Black men being thrown into prisons created an industry that was profitable for the government. The owners of these prisons kept on getting their inmates and thus were able to stuff the pockets of the men in Congress. A vicious cycle indeed. Kendrick explains that the government during this War on Drugs infiltrated the black communities with these guns and drugs in order to have a justifiable reason to lock ‘em up. The government then shovels money to FOX to keep a narrative of fear mongering to its dedicated viewers. This then pins white-right America on a false narrative that the black man is gang affiliated.
