Becoming a nurse has been one of my biggest goals. I have always had a desire to care for individuals that are not well. As an African American trying to pursue a career in nursing, I wanted to know who were some of the first African American nurses in this country.

Mary Mahoney was the first African America nurse in the United States, She paved the way for African American nursing students, and she also played an important role in the voting rights for African American women.

Some of the first African American nurses at Baton Rouge General hospital were recognized recently for there services. They paved the way for many African American nurses in Louisiana.
