If you listen to the theme song of the 1975 sitcom, The Jefferson’s, you hear Ja’net Dubois singing, “We finally got a piece of that pie”. But what is that pie?

Well, lets think about what pie actually is. Pie is a dessert. In many households, dessert is only eaten after you finish dinner. It is the sweet treat that you are looking forward to having.

So, in for African Americans society, what is the sweet treat that we are look forward to?

Well for the Jefferson’s, their piece of piece of the pie was being able to afford a nice “deluxe” apartment. George Jefferson owned a dry-cleaning business. Because of his successful business, he was able to move into a nicer part of the city and into a nice apartment. During that period in time, it was not common for black people to be able to afford nice things. Many of them were struggling to make it. On the other hand, white Americans were seen as wealthy and stable. They could afford nicer things and they did not struggle as much. So, the Jefferson’s had finally reached a goal. They had accomplished something that seemed impossible. They finally got a piece of the pie.

So, in today’s society, what do African Americans see as piece of the pie? What do we want in life that seems unattainable? Well, one thing that we want is equality. In the year 2017, we still face inequality in America because of race. So, when will we have equality in America? How do we attain that? We may never know the answer to those questions, but we do know that people will not stop trying to achieve that goal.
