Blackface

Blackface was a form of theatrical makeup used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes. Some of these stereotypes include Blacks eating watermelon and chicken, talking loud and dancing. This was not a practice left in the past unfortunately. With social media giving people the opportunity to hide behind their post, this has become the perfect platform for racism. The picture above is modern day black face. This has become a halloween costume, a way to intimidate and just a joke in general. In the Netflix original Dear White People, we see this issue explode an university. In the show, a white frat throws a Black face party and every black stereotype one would think of shows up. There were rappers, celebrities and gangbangers alike. This was seen as normal and cool until blacks who disagreed showed up. Now this was done in a movie/T.V. show to prove a point that racism still existed in those settings, however this does not just happen in literary works to prove a point. Unfortunately this is a picture I saw on my timeline now in 2017. Just shows how far we have came. Overall there is a gap in communication and understanding.
